Government look to increase tyre depth
The Government is to look at increasing the minimum legal tread depth
of tyres of 1.6mm to at least 2mm in a bid to reduce accidents and improve
road safety.
A top level meeting of officials is due to take place this week but it
looks certain that motorists will have to change their tyres more often.
Research strongly suggests that braking under wet and slippery conditions
with tyre tread at 1.66mm is not nearly as efficient as it is at 3mm.
If implemented the new rules would fail cars that currently pass the NCT.
"A car can pass the test (NCT) with 1.6mm but it could travel 30,000
or 40,000 miles on it after that.
"And that is a major concern," Traffic Minister Ivor Callely
warned.
