Hauliers set to protest

A protest over the new penalty points system will see truckers form a convoy and drive at 40kph at different locations around the country, although a date has not been set yet.

Irish Road Haulage Association spokesperson Jimmy Quinn revealed that plans for the protest are being discussed at the moment, but nothing has been confirmed.
Hauliers are irate over the government’s decision to ban them from using the outside lane of motorways and dual carriageways. Truckers will receive two penalty points if they do so.

“We are hearing rumours that drivers are going to be doing 40kph in convoys on the inside lane. We are meeting Junior Transport Minister Pat the Cope Gallagher on Tuesday (April 4th) to discuss the situation,” said Quinn.
