Group campaign against Cork quarrying
A lobby group in East Cork has warned that the rampant quarrying taking
place in the region is threatening to overwhelm the local community, if
it persists.
Cork County manager Maurice Maloney met with members of the Carrigtwohill
Environmental Alliance to discuss the problem of rampant quarrying.
Plans have been put in place to open a sixth quarry in the area and the
CEA are lobbying against this as they feel that the noise and dust levels
have increased too much in recent times.
At present, there are five quarries operating on land between the N25
linking Cork to Midleton and the North Channel, which forms the inner
reaches of Cork Harbour.
There is now a semi-circle of six quarries surrounding and gradually
overwhelming town lands on the north shore of the channel, said
a group spokesperson.
