Wexford quarry has opposition
Residents of a town in Co. Wexford are strongly opposing plans to extract
almost two millions tonnes of stone from a quarry near their homes.
Planning permission has been sought by Hudson Concrete Ltd, Arklow, Co.
Wicklow to establish a quarry covering a 42-acre site from Ballythomas
Hill, near Gorey, Co. Wexford.
Residents believe that the quarrying would damage the environment in the
area, which has been described as sensitive landscape area in the county
plan.
People living in the area also feel that the value of their homes will
drop if the planning permission is granted by Wexford County Council.
In terms of community activism, it has been one of the most interesting
demonstrations of rural people power around here in a while in defence
of their countryside, said Fianna Fail Councillor Malcolm Byrne.
