Hijackers in court
The three men accused of hijacking a lorry carrying E300,000 worth of
vodka from Baileboro to Dublin appeared at Longford District Court on
Tuesday morning (April 11th).
The lorry was hijacked near Dunshaughlin and the driver was abducted during
the incident. However, the driver was found safe and sound, while the
truck and three men were apprehended by gardai near Delvin, Co. Westmeath.
It appears that at least one of the men involved had IRA connections,
but Sinn Fein spokesperson Martin McGuinness moved to distance this incident
from the IRA.
The IRA was not involved in the raid. It appears someone who was
previously associated with Irish republicanism, who was a prisoner in
Portlaoise, who was released under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement
eight years ago, and did not become any way involved with republican politics
in the area in which he lived, is suspected of being involved in a heist
of some description for personal gain in Co Meath, said McGuinness.
I condemn it unreservedly and I do believe that anyone involved
in criminality of any description should be arrested, should be charged
and should be brought before a judge or jury.
