Lorry driver awarded compensation

A lorry driver from the Philippines has been awarded E6,600 after his employer, Johnson Logistics was found guilty of underpaying the defendant for four years.

The case was heard at the Labour Court on Monday (April 10th) . The judge ruled that Jose Lito Quiber should be compensated for being paid less than the minimum wage for a 60-hour week.

“At the time of his appointment Mr. Quiber was contracted to work eight hours a day – with a guarantee of 45 hours a week. However, he ended up working an average of 60 hours a week – not the 45 hours as stated in his contract,” said SIPTU organiser Des Hughes.

“The Labour Court, having considered the evidence presented to it – formed the view that our member had indeed been paid less than the minimum wage for his period of employment and awarded our member E6,619.60.”
