IBEC threaten court action
Irelands leading business federation IBEC has revealed that it is
considering suing Dublin City Council over its plans to ban HGVs
from the city centre.
A vote by councillors earlier in the week unanimously decided to ban any
five-axled or more trucks from the city centre, thus forcing them to use
the East Link toll.
However, IBEC believe that this could cause major traffic disruption and
delay importing and exporting of goods, while the move could also be illegal.
Preliminary legal advice suggests that the city council is exceeding
authority by curtailing HGV access to Dublin Port and is in breach of
EU free movement provisions, said Reg McCabe, IBEC transport director.
