Driver to get his job back
A Dublin truck driver has won his appeal to have his job re-instated and
was awarded E18,500 compensation at an Employment Appeals Tribunal on
Thursday, February 2nd.
Martin Maher, Cherrywood Avenue, Clondalkin resigned abruptly in October
2004 when he returned to work after being off sick and was told that the
wage structure with his employer Greyhound Waste Disposal had been changed.
Mr Maher had been with the company since 1987 and was on a points system
where by the more bins he collected the more he was paid, However, the
change in format would have resulted in the defendant earning as little
as E250 a week.
The tribunal also heard that Mahers job was taken over by a non-national
who was working for considerably less than Mahers pay at the time
and that the defendant had trained a few weeks previous to the incident.
Despite claims from company officials that Mr Maher was offered his job
back on four separate occasions, the Tribunal ruled in the defendants
favour.
