| Carrigtwohill campaign
cites quarry's environment effects
A drive is underway in Carrigtwohill, County Cork to prevent the development
of a sixth quarry in the area.
Residents are worried about the possible environmental impact of the
project. Carrigtwohill Environmental Alliance has joined forces with local
Green Party representatives and Labour TD Joe Sherlock to express concern
about the quarry in Rossmore.
Healy bros, the Cork-based concrete products manufacturer recently applied
for planning permission to extend its quarrying activities to Rossmore.
Alliance co-chairman Peter Thompson said homeowners had become concerned
about traffic, dust and the effect on property value and the impact on
their environment.
Furthermore, he emphasised that people had gained little from the developments
and that heritage was under threat.
"There have been all sorts of quarry activity and people have made
a fortune out of it but there is nothing going back into the area. We
object to having our heritage destroyed.
"It (the development) is in contrast to the vision of the area to
have too many quarries. Residents are very concerned and people are prepared
to stick their neck out to stop it from going ahead," he said.
A Healy bros spokesman stated that the company was aware of the concerns
of local residents.
"We hope residents will realise that our comprehensive environmental
impact statement and environmental programme demonstrates our very real
commitment in this area," he said.
