Court rejects fishermen’s plea

The Supreme Court has ruled against fishermen who have opposed the sale of part of a quay in Co Waterford on which they have traditionally landed their catches.

The Port Of Waterford Company has welcomed the decision. It will now go ahead with the sale.

The court turned down the fishermen's argument that they had a right to land catches at the quay. It also ruled that the fishermen's rights were not threatened by the sale.

Denis O'Flaherty, a fisherman from Kilmore Quay, Co Wexford, said the decision was devastating. He said that the other landing facilities at Belview Port, three miles away, were unsuitable.
