Councillor highlights ferry fume problems

A Waterford councillor has stated that fumes from traffic loading and disembarking from a ferry service from Passage East, Co. Waterford, to Ballyhack, Co. Wexford, were making life difficult for residents.

High volumes of traffic have caused parts of a road to collapse and footpaths had been damaged.

In 2005 the Department of the Environment gave E100,000 for a study by consultants.

The study was finished in October. It identified a new access road to new terminal. Funding was to be made available when the study was finished.

The Passage East Car Ferry Company said it gave plans for the new terminal to the council six years ago but that no funding had been released for the road. A site a mile upriver had been planned for the terminal.

Acting director of services Waterford County Council Ray Dwyer said that the road would be produced a lot quicker if funding were provided privately as well as publicly.

Mr Carey asked FBD Insurance to produce some funding for the road. He stated that the village have been “let down badly” by the firm.
