System catching overloaded trucks
A new hi-tech weighing system could ensure that all overloaded HGVs could
be eradicated from roads in the United Kingdom.
The detection equipment is to be installed at 24 sites on motorways and
trunk roads across the UK in an effort to catch lorries going over their
permitted weight.
Special sensors were buried under a section of the M6 in the West Midlands
to catch vehicles as they drove by. Cameras captured registrations as
a central computer checked to make sure lorries were no heavier than allowed.
Inspectors waiting a few miles down the road were told about overloaded
trucks. The vehicles were then stopped and then brought to task over the
matter.
Project leader Gordon McDonald said that the system proved hugely
effective.
