Cheats conning drivers with false sellers
Drivers selling cars and light commercials on websites are being targeted
by cheats in Britain, who are promising possible buyers in return for
money.
The European Consumer Centre in Dublin said it was getting complaints
from Irish car-sellers about British firms who marketed themselves as
vehicle-matching services.
The cheats look at sites such as www.carzone.ie. They then contact sellers
and then pretend to have lists of people in Britain and Ireland who wish
to buy the vehicles. Sellers are told they can be matched
with possible buyers in return for a fee.
Sellers are told that they will be given refunds if they do not sell their
car. However consumer watchdogs say that sellers are only given a listing
on a lesser-known website instead of contact information and have no chance
of a refund.
Publications like Car Buyers Guide are telling their sellers about
the tricks. Sellers who advertised with mobile numbers are also warned
about companies offering local buyers as the callers are not
able to work out where they live.
