British Government facing EU fines over northern dumping
The British Government is to face heavy fines from the European Union
if it is unable to show it is doing something about illegal dumping in
Northern Ireland.
Much of the illegal waste is illegally dumped across the border. Since
2004 60 illegal dumps have been found in Northern Ireland.
It is thought that thousands of tonnes of rubbish are being left in the
countryside. They are polluting ecosystems and are damaging to peoples
health.
The British government now has two months to respond to allegations that
it has not done anything about handling waste which could damage the environment.
Heavy fines are likely to be imposed if EU officials are not happy with
how they react. A committed crime team has been set up to implement legislation
and crack down on the unlawful transportation of waste in the Republic.
