Kilrush Council admits dumping

After an investigation from Clare County Council, Kilrush Town Council has admitted to the illegal dumping of waste on council-owned property.

The dumping involved old computers, bicycles, lorry tyres, bin bags, stones and soil on Cooraclare Road in Kilrush. The waste was dumped at the site by people employed by the council to dispose of waste where some could not be separated for recycling at the local Lisdeen transfer station.
Green Party Councillor Brian Meaney said no answer had been given as to why the Council tried to bury the waste when the unlawful dumping was first highlighted. Mr Meaney said he had lodged a complaint with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). He asked that Clare County Council take action.
“Clare County Council should review the sorry saga, identify what it has cost and who received the payments from Kilrush Town Council for burying the waste,” he said.

He warned that anyone involved in the activity would be prosecuted.
Town clerk Fiona Mooney admitted that the council had done wrong. She said that she had communicated Kilrush Town Council’s waste policy to everybody. She was adamant that this occurrence would never happen again.
“You need vigilance out there to expose gaps in an organisation and that is what has taken place. There won’t be a recurrence of this,” she said.
