Quarry jobs in the balance
Clare County Councils decision to restrict the multi-million euro
expansion of Whelans quarry in Ennis could result in the loss of
110 jobs.
The Whelan Group is one of the countrys biggest quarry operators
and last month the planning authority allowed Whelan Limestone Quarries
to expand their operation, although planning was refused on two parts
of the plan with permission to expire after a ten year period.
Whelans had planned to extend the life of the quarry in Ennis by
26 years, but following the refusal of Clare County Council to grant permission,
the group believe that it could result in the termination of 110 jobs.
