ICF call for illegal quarries to be shutdown
Illegal quarries and concrete plants are doing unlimited damage to the
environment and should be closed down, according to the Irish Concrete
Federation.
The ICF have called on the Department of the Environment and local authorities
to close all illegal quarries and concrete plants because of the damage
they were causing to the environment.
At the ICF AGM in Kildare, association president Declan McCartney stressed
that many companies were taking advantage of the planning regulations
quarry registration process.
The mechanisms are there to deal with them under Section 8 of the
2000 Planning Act, which clearly sets out the penalties involved, including
fines up to approximately Eu2 million and ultimately the imposition of
prison sentences.
