ICF call for illegal quarries to be shutdown

Illegal quarries and concrete plants are doing unlimited damage to the environment and should be closed down, according to the Irish Concrete Federation.

The ICF have called on the Department of the Environment and local authorities to close all illegal quarries and concrete plants because of the damage they were causing to the environment.
At the ICF AGM in Kildare, association president Declan McCartney stressed that many companies were taking advantage of the planning regulations’ quarry registration process.

“The mechanisms are there to deal with them under Section 8 of the 2000 Planning Act, which clearly sets out the penalties involved, including fines up to approximately Eu2 million and ultimately the imposition of prison sentences.
