Waterford site given waste management licence
The riverside site which will be sold in Waterford has been provided with
a waste management licence by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Bord Gais has responsibility for cleaning up the site. A spokesperson
for the company said it had appointed a joint venture of SIAC and ENVISAN,
Jan De Nul NV as contractors for the renovation of the site at the waterside
in Waterford City.
The project is due to be completed in October 2006. The spokesperson indicated
that waste would be moved from Waterford to a Belgian base.
Waste material will be transported from the site to the nearby Bellview
Port in Waterford, where it will be shipped directly to a treatment facility
in Antwerp for thermal treatment. It is intended that the site will be
sold for future redevelopment, she said.
In December Waterford city councillors spoke about the appearance of the
site. Independent councillor Davy Daniels highlighted the importance of
the waterside area as an amenity but said it needed to be cleaned up.
He also said that buildings which had fallen into ruin were becoming a
problem in the area.
