EPA to announce details of carbon emissions
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is to announce its second draft
allocation plan for the amount of carbon dioxide that can be generated
by Irish companies.
Under the Kyoto protocol there is a limit on the amount of carbon dioxide
which will be generated by the top 100 Irish Industries.
Industries in Ireland will be allowed emit 115 million tonnes of carbon
dioxide between 2008 and 2012 before facing fines. This is dependent on
the production of carbon dioxide which is the main cause of climate change
over the last few years. A small percentage of the emissions is to be
kept for new companies.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will offer special treatment
for efficient combined heat and power plants.
The EPA wants to recognise the role of renewal energy in the electricity
market. The company has spent E300 million to make its Moneypoint firm
more environmentally friendly. The additional costs incurred by it and
the other generators are likely to be passed on to the consumer.
