Trucks to transport waste to Poolbeg plant
Over 100 large trucks will travel daily to supply the Poolbeg incinerator
with around 300,000 tonnes of waste a year via the M50 and the Port Tunnel,
it has emerged.
Containers will be needed to supply the incinerator every day. Around
40 trucks will have to travel through the city at off-peak hours. The
issue has caused much opposition in Dublins south inner city.
Most material will be moved from Poolbeg between the off-peak hours of
7.30pm and 10.30pm. Recyclable material will be taken out of the waste
at five stations spread throughout the city, before the rest is compacted,
baled and transported to Poolbeg by the M50 and Dublin Port Tunnel in
the containers.
Dublin City Council intends to apply for planning permission to build
a 600,000-tonne incinerator to cope with the capitals annual waste.
In a letter to the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform in March,
the councils assistant city manager, Matt Twomey stated that the
council would be looking for extra waste to burn in the surrounding Dublin
area if the 600,000 tonne target was not met.
Poisonous residues will be taken to Germany and Norway to be destroyed
at a later date. Those managing the plant will have to make sure that
most of the rest of the ash produced will be recycled.
Mr Twomey was not able to give a clear view as to whether an Irish plant
would work or whether the ash would have to be exported.
The residues left over from the incineration would be shipped out of Dublin
rather than be transported by road.
