Cutbacks save speeding drivers from incurring penalty points

Figures recently released showing that Garda detection of speeding motorists was the second lowest in Europe last month have been blamed on the overtime ban.
A survey across 23 countries in the EU shows that there is a low chance of being caught here compared to many of the other surveyed countries.
For the month of April, Ireland recorded 3,481 speed intercepts compared to Norway, who have a comparable population, caught 5,222.
According to TISPOL president Javier Sanchez Ferragut, speed is one of the greatest killers on the road today.
He said: "The speeds you use are your choice. But research has shown that complying with speed limits could save nearly 6,000 lives a year."
