NRA plans E5 lorry toll on Limerick tunnel

The National Roads Authority (NRA) has proposed a toll of over E5 for every articulated lorry using the new toll tunnel under the River Shannon.

Costs of the proposed tolls, they say, are consistent with the European average.

Construction work has started in Limerick on the toll tunnel under the River Shannon . The tunnel will form part of the biggest road-engineering project ever undertaken in the State outside of Dublin.

This is the second part of the E350m Limerick Southern Ring Road. The 10-kilometre stretch of dual carriageway is expected to be finished in 2009.

The project will remove thousands of vehicles daily from Limerick city centre. It is thought that the toll will generate revenue of around E20 million in its first year of business.

The Irish Road Hauliers Association has said that business located along the Shannon Estuary and in the port of Foynes would be worst hit by the planned toll.
