Ozo expand services
Published on 15 July 2010
Ozo 24/7 Collect & Recycle is one of Ireland’s leading waste management companies that prides itself a delivering an efficient and reliable service to its large customer base.
The company, which is located on the Jamestown Road in Inchicore, Co Dublin, has recently expanded its domestic waste collection service across parts of Co Wicklow and Ozo General Manager Tony Finnerty speaks to Irish Trucker about the expansion and the history of this well-established business.
First, we will take a brief look at where it all began and to do that we go back to the late seventies, when George P Kearns established Waste Control in 1978.
George adopted a policy of trust, efficiency and reliability that has stood the company in good stead over the years, while the customer base has increased on an annual basis.
George sold the company to Jonathan and Jacqulyn Archer in 1999 and this coincided with the business being re-launched under the name of Total Waste Control.
Jonathan and Jacqulyn continued George’s ethos of looking after their customers and providing a service that they were happy with. In 2001, the company was moved into purpose built premises in Inchicore to meet the many rules and regulations that have to be adhered to in the waste management industry and a new name was adopted as Ozo 24/7 Collect & Recycle was launched.
Ozo has been one of the leaders in its field of expertise ever since and have lead the way in providing additional services to their customers, one of which is to provide a 24/7 collection service, while they were one of the first waste management companies to install GPS tracking systems on their trucks.
“We provide a wide range of services across the waste management sector. This includes domestic and commercial waste collection services across Dublin and surrounding counties,” said Tony.
“Last November, we began operating a domestic waste collection service in Wicklow. This is a natural progression in the expansion of the business and it is something that we are continuing to work on at the moment.
“We also offer a full range of skips, which are used servicing our current commercial customer base and for private household use. The construction industry has suffered greatly in the last year or so and we have had to adapt to that fact.”
Another service provided by the company is waste recycling where all materials brought to the facility are sorted and segregated before being moved on to be recycled into various products.
“The recycling cuts down on sending materials to landfill, which helps the environment and greatly reduces the amount of residual sent to landfill sites.”
Ozo have a dedicated and highly trained staff that ensure the business runs smoothly and as a team they have seen the company grow into one of the most efficient waste management companies in the country.
The advancement of legislation in the waste industry has meant that traceability is key to operations and this is something that Ozo make sure is kept in order.
“Legislation plays a very important part in waste management. In recent years, it has become an integral part of the industry. There are plenty of rules and regulations to be adhered too, but they are there for a reason and it is important to follow them stringently.”
Ozo look after a number of commercial properties as part of its service and they can tailor a package best suited for the customer.
“Cost is everything in this current economic climate and we have the experience to provide efficient cost effective services for commercial and industrial customers.
“The specific needs of hotels, offices, pubs, restaurants, shops, printers, supermarkets and manufacturers are all catered for in the best possible way for them.”
We have also invested highly in our marketing strategy and have also engaged in some selected sponsorship in the last year. These include Leinster Rugby, Greystones Rugby Club, Wicklow County Cricket Club, Dublin GAA Camogie to name but a few.
Through its collection service Ozo has 40 trucks on the roads collecting waste from both commercial and domestic dwellings. The fleet is keep relatively new and this cuts down on any downtime that can be caused by older vehicles.
“In 2008, there was a major investment placed in the fleet when there were eight or nine new trucks bought. We tend to keep the fleet as new as possible and there will be more trucks added to the business next year.”
Ozo 24/7 Collect & Recycle employs over 100 people many of who have been with the company for a number of years now, which Tony feels tells its own story.
“We wouldn’t have a big turnover of staff. The majority of people that join us stay with the company. Everyone has a role to play and they all help out. In fact this year, we have recriuted three new drivers.
“We are competing in a tough market and the main push will be to develop the domestic side of the business. We have done that by starting the service in Wicklow and hopefully we can expand that further over the coming months.”
For the past 31 years, the name of the company may have changed on a few occasions, but the essential ingredients of hard work and supplying a top quality service remain. This has resulted in Ozo 24/7 Collect & Recycle remain ahead of its competitors, while their desire to keep improving has benefited their large customer base.
