Safety measures aimed at improving HGV wheel security
Published on 18 November 2009
According to research undertaken by the Transport Research Laboratory almost 400 instances of wheel loss from lorries were recorded during 2006.
The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has compiled criteria informing both maintenance staff and drivers the tell-tale signs of poorly secured wheels. In a manual Wheel Security: a best practice guide the transport industry will provide essential information on wheel security procedures. Good wheel security practice will help to highlight and cement road safety standards and thus help to protect a company’s O-licence.
The guide has been published by a working group comprising FTA, ATS Euromaster, IRTE (Institute of Road Transport Engineers) - a professional sector of SOE (Society of Operations Engineers) - and SITA UK Ltd.
