Transport Union set to overcome border crossing delays

Published on 6 May 2010

Speaking at the CAREC seminar held in the framework of the Asian Development Bank’s agm Martin Marmy, Secretary General of the International Road Transport Union outlined the IRU’s ‘Model Highway Initiative’.

The Highway Initiative is aimed at creating harmonized border crossing procedures based on UN multilateral trade and road transport facilitation instruments. In his address to the seminar the IRU Secretary General said that up to 40% of transport time was lost dealing with administration at border crossings. Mr. Marmy said that the IRU Model Highway Initiative focuses on the removal of these obstacles but it would require the support and joint efforts of international institutions to be implemented in a true public-private partnership as the next IRU practical step to develop Eurasian road transport linkages.
