Trucks will dominate US freight for next decade
Published on 7 June 2011
Trucking is expected to dominate US domestic transportation over the next ten years.
The US Freight Transportation Forecast to 2022 report by the American Trucking Association (ATA) and analysts IHS Global Insight and Martin Labbe Associates, indicates that overall freight tonnage in the US is expected to grow by 24% by 2022 (taking market share from railway), while revenue for the industry is projected to rise by 66%.
The report said US trucking would continue to “dominate” the freight transport industry in terms of both tonnage and revenue. In 2010, trucking accounted for 67% of freight tonnage and 81.2% of industry revenue, and the report predicts that, by 2022, haulage’s share of the market will rise to 70%, in terms of tonnage.
However, it will struggle to translate this into increased revenues, according to the report, with its share merely increasing from the current 81.2% to 81.4% in 2022.
