Based in Thurles, Co. Tipperary, Jerry Ryan Jnr Coaches provides exceptional coach and minibus hire for all occasions and to all locations.

The business was originally established in 1995 by husband and wife Jerry and Kate Ryan. Jerry Ryan Jnr Coaches operates a 25-strong fleet of buses as well as six luxury cars to cater for all types of groups. The latest addition to the fleet is a brand-new Volvo 9900 B11R which was purchased from Volvo Bus & Coach. The investment comes after the company also acquired two new Volvo Jonckheere B11R 54-seaters also from Volvo Bus & Coach Sales in Coventry in 2019.

Offering flexibility, fuel-efficiency, comfort and safety, they are the largest in a modern fleet that also includes Ford Transit minibuses and Mercedes-Benz Vario midi-buses. Regarding the make-up of the fleet, Daniel, co-director alongside his father, Jerry notes: “We have 31 vehicles this year, from eight and 16-seaters up to 34 and 54-seaters. The older coaches are used for student services, while the more high-spec, luxury coaches are dedicated to private hire for tours and corporate events, etc.”

Jerry, who has been involved in coach and minibus hire for over 30 years, is joined in the family-run business by his sons Daniel and James, and daughter Rebecca. He has passed down the same enthusiasm to his children. Daniel, who assists with the day-to-day operations and looks after the busy office, with the help of James and Rebecca. Rebecca is a student in MIC Thurles studying Business, who recently obtained her D1 16-seater driving licence, so the future of the company is in safe hands!

All drivers are experienced, CPC-trained, courteous and professional in every aspect of their job. The fleet is maintained by mechanic John Geoghegan at the company’s state-of-the-art workshop.

“John has been with us from the beginning. He was foreman at Bus Eireann’s Thurles depot before that and has a wealth of experience in maintenance and repairs. We’d be lost without him,” Daniel adds.

“John receives back-up support from Cummins Repairs & Tyres in Rahealty, Thurles.”

Jerry Ryan Jnr Coaches also enjoys an excellent relationship with its suppliers who include Murphy & Ryan Motor Factors, Moynihan-Ryan Commercial Spares, LC Lube Oil & Spares, Bourke’s Autoglass, Kavanagh’s Urlingford Test Centre, Transpec and Surehaul. Its suppliers provide a great service, which is vital to keep the whole operation running smoothly. Without their backup and flexibility, the company would not be able to provide the wide range of flexible services that can be changed at short notice. And not forgetting Diarmuid Thompson and Dave Porter of Volvo Bus & Coach Sales, who have always been a pleasure to deal with.

Soaring fuel costs and driver shortages are two of the big issues currently facing the sector. With the entire transport industry struggling to attract young people, Daniel is delighted to see Tipperary ETB (Education & Training Board) providing bus driver training courses at its training facility in Archerstown Industrial Estate in Thurles.
