Based in Dunmore, Co Galway, Evergreen Fields Ltd provides nationwide services that include biosolids, compost and digestate, helping farmers reduce costs and improve soil health sustainably. Irish Trucker spoke with Managing Director Stephen Smyth to hear all about the company’s fleet, which includes a brand-new Scania 560 S, and what separates the business from its competition.

These are busy times at Evergreen Fields Ltd and the plan for Managing Director Stephen Smyth and the rest of the team in Flaskaghmore, Dunmore, Co Galway is to try and keep things that way for the foreseeable future.

Operating with 16 full-time staff, the company is a waste management specialist which has grown an excellent reputation for its work over the last three decades.

Evergreen Fields Ltd is very much a family-run business.

Irish Trucker caught up with Stephen Smyth recently to find more about the ins and outs of what is very much a thriving transport business out west.

“We’re operating with 12 trucks in the fleet at the moment and there’s 38 trailers,” he said. “We’ve added a brand new 560 S this year and we had two brand new 540 S trucks added last year, as well as a new Volvo.

“Truck-wise, we’ll probably add at least one more truck if not this year, definitely next year. With regards to trailers, we have four brand new trailers coming from Ashbourne and should have them by the start of March. They’re four brand new tipping trailers.”

Since its inception 32 years ago, Evergreen Fields has grown into a tried and trusted company which holds a golden reputation amongst its clientele.

Its nationwide services include biosolids, compost, and digestate, helping farmers reduce costs and improve soil health sustainably.

Certified to the highest standards, Evergreen Fields remains committed to greener, more productive farming solutions tailored to support Ireland’s agricultural future.

Right now, business is in a good place for the Galway venture according to its Managing Director.

“Business is good, to be fair. Look, Evergreen Fields is on the go 31/32 years now. I've been overseeing everything the last 11 years now and it’s busier we’re getting,” enthused Stephen.

“Last year was probably the busiest year we ever had. To be fair, the beginning of this year was quiet. January was slack enough but, overall, it’s very busy. Because we specialise in waste water with the biosolids and digestates it keeps us busy.

“We have all our own facilities to store it and treat it, so we have loads of capacity to do that. We probably have more to do that than any of our other main competitors. That seems to be the case so, yeah, we’re busy.”

Indeed, the company has grown from a one-man, one vehicle operation into now being a major competitor in the supply of biosolids as a low-cost fertiliser to farmers throughout Ireland.

Evergreen Fields has been assessed and registered as meeting the requirements of ISO 9001 Quality Management System, ISO 14001 Environmental System and ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System.

“We've been involved in biosolids for the last 30 odd years really. In saying that, it’s probably in the last 10/11 years that we really started to get busy with it,” said Stephen.

“My dad Martin would’ve run things from say the late 80s, early 90s up to probably 2010 or ‘11. Then I came back from Australia in 2014 and just started ringing a few old contacts that we had and got enough work for a day a week with a truck. Then it led to two days a week, then three days a week and then fast-forward to 11 years later and there’s a lot of plant and equipment around the place again.

“The truck side of things is busy, but then we have the tractor side of things as well where we haul and deliver to farmers and spread for them. That’s another big part of the business as well.”

So, all of that considered, the burning question is what has been the secret behind the success of Evergreen Fields to date?

How has a small start-up grown into what is now very much a thriving business that operates nationwide and has provided farmers with cost-saving fertiliser for more than three decades now?

“It’s down to the service, to be honest with you,” the Managing Director stated. “Service is key. It’s what we pride ourselves on and no matter what job we tackle, we’ll get it done in the timescale.

“If we say we’re going to be there, we’re there. Unless there’s an awful catastrophe somewhere, we’re there on time and the job is done. I think from the farmer’s point of view, he’s not wondering ‘Is he coming or not?’. They know we’re going to be there and that means a lot to farmers.

“Not just farmers, also the clients we’re doing work for with the trucks hauling from A to B. It’s the same thing. When they book us to do a job, it’s done.”

Looking at the coming months for the business, Stephen is hoping for more of the same as they’ve been getting busier year on year for the past decade now.

“I don’t think a whole pile will change this year. It’s ticking over the last 30 odd years, especially the last 10 or 11 years there,” he said.

“We’ve only gotten busier and busier. We’ve grown every year and the machinery has got better every year. Last year was the first year that we brought new trucks in and it turned out to be a very good plan and this year is no different as well.

“We’re looking for new tipper trailers as well and, if they work out well, the plan is to freshen up more trailers next year.

“We’re steady with everything and everything is looking very positive.”

Fantastic to hear.
