Based in Knocktopher, Co Kilkenny, Kevin Brennan Commercials Ltd offers customers services in 24-hour breakdown recovery, full diagnostics, trailer hire, general maintenance and CVRT test preparation. Irish Trucker caught up with Kevin Brennan himself to learn more about the ins and outs of his company, the vehicles he operates with and his hopes for the business going forward.
Kilkenny native Kevin Brennan is a busy man these days and he wouldn’t have it any other way, having set-up his own business in 2021 before officially making it a limited venture this year.
Kevin Brennan Commercials Ltd has grown a reputation over the last four years amongst its customers for its reliability and excellent service.
As well as doing all makes of truck and trailer repairs, this Co Kilkenny concern can provide its customers with 24-hour breakdown recovery, full diagnostics, service, trailer hire, general maintenance and CVRT test preparation.
Irish Trucker spoke with Kevin Brennan recently to discuss the state of business at the moment for the company and what made him take the decision to go out on his own with his own venture.
“We’re based here in Thomastown Road, Knocktopher, Co Kilkenny and we've been established for four years. We became a limited company this year,” he outlined.
“There’s just two of us working here full-time and my father would have his own business, with 12 of his own trucks on the road as well.
“Here at Kevin Brennan Commercials Ltd, we do 24-hour recovery, service, full diagnostics, a bit of trailer hire and just general maintenance after that. We prepare vehicles for CVRT testing as well.”
A man involved in trucks all of his life, Kevin finished secondary school when he was 18 and went straight into training with Surehaul Commercials.
After a stint of driving for another company, he took the decision to go “back on the spanners” in 2020 and, a year later, he’d be running his own operation having built up the right contacts.
The rest, as they say, is history.
“I never really did anything else, only worked with trucks. I drove them for a while and I went back on the spanners five years ago and just decided then to go out on my own,” said Kevin.
“When I started out on my own it was a struggle like it would be for anyone else. It took a while to build up customers and all that craic, but once we got going and got a good name, it started thriving.”
Fast-forward to today and Kevin Brennan Commercials Ltd along the Thomastown Road is still going strong.
The company has earned itself a reputation for carrying out excellent work and, above everything else, that’s exactly what Kevin himself envisioned for a business with his name on it when he first set-up shop in ‘21.
“Sure, look at, it’s up and down here but we can’t complain,” he said. “You have good days and you have bad days. It’s the same as everything, but there’s always a steady flow of work there and we do have a good bit on at the minute, thankfully enough.”
As for the machinery that Kevin Brennan Commercials Ltd operates with, it currently has two vans on the road, a recovery truck and a truck low loader.
He also has a fantastic selection of trailers that are ready for hire at any time, with the fleet being made up of flat beds, curtain siders and Euroliners.
As it stands, there are no plans to add to the fleet at Thomastown Road in the near future, but that could well change depending on a couple of different things.
“We’ll see how it goes. I’m trying to get the trailer hire side of it going, so if that takes off then we’ll buy a few trailers alright but we’re not buying anything at the minute anyway,” Kevin stated.
So, all of that considered, the clear question is what has been the secret behind the success of Kevin Brennan Commercial Ltd’s success to date?
How has this small start-up grown into what is now a busy commercials firm which holds a golden reputation amongst its regular customers?
The way Kevin sees it, from his experience, “a good reliable service” goes a long way in this line of work.
“We’ve a fairly good pass rate there on the CRVT side of stuff,” said the company’s owner and founder.
“We do have fairly competitive rates as well and we don’t leave anyone in the lurch. The man on the road always gets priority.
“There’s not a lot of people doing 24-hour breakdown assistance anymore. It’s hard got and we’d like to think that we give a good reliable service in it.”
He added: “I have good contacts there, too. If there was a man up or down the country stuck, if I could get someone closer to him, I’d get him out of a hole as well. I cover the general south east though and, if we can’t get anyone, we go to the men that are broken down.”
Looking at the months ahead for the company, Kevin says he’s keen to keep moving the business in the right direction and continue to grow both the recovery and hire end of it, as they fast approach half a decade in business along the Thomastown Road.
“I’d be hoping to expand the recovery side of things a small bit there and maybe grow the hire fleet as well. We’ll still be doing the general repairs and the CVRT preparation and all, so we’re not going to let that side down either.
“We’ve a full range of diagnostics there for every truck and trailer as well. We use the leading brand at the minute, Jaltest Diagnostics and it’s brilliant, I have to say.”
