John O’Neill Heavy Haulage Ltd is a one-stop shop for all your heavy haulage, crane hire and abnormal load requirements. It continues to go from strength to strength after more than 40 years inbusiness.

Strategically located close to all the major road networks and ports in south Co. Dublin, the family-run business is recognised as one of Ireland’s leading heavy haulage, crane hire and abnormal / wide load specialists. Boasting a large fleet of state-of-the-art trucks, trailers, cranes and escort vehicles, John O’Neill Heavy Haulage Ltd prides itself on its reliability, quality service and ability to adapt to its customers’ ever-changing needs and issues as they arise.

John O’Neill started the business in 1985 with just one truck, being one of the first in Ireland to provide a lifting and transportation service for large loads such as portable cabins. He has since progressed to a fleet of specialised vehicles with the ability to transport some of the largest loads ever moved on Irish roads. Their team of experts have years of experience in the heavy haulage industry and can handle the most challenging jobs. They take the time to understand your needs and develop a personalised transportation plan that ensures your cargo is delivered safely and on time by taking all of the necessary precautions.

John, whose father Richard O’Neill Snr was a HGV driver for Guinness for over 30 years, is joined in the business by his son Richard Jnr, daughter Grace and a 10- strong team. All of the drivers are fully licensed, highly-skilled and vastly experienced at moving plant and wide loads.

“Our proven ability to offer reliable, efficient and cost-effective crane hire and heavy haulage solutions is second to none,” Richard says.

“Heavy haulage, crane hire and abnormal loads are the three main services we offer, with abnormal loads now accounting for a large part of our business. We transport a lot of modular buildings for construction / education projects. We also transport abnormal / oversized loads for key infrastructure projects & upgrade works, and have been doing this for a long time.

“We’ve seen a big increase in the demand for work which involves operating truck-mounted cranes to lift, transport, unload and assemble equipment."

John O’Neill Heavy Haulage Ltd specialises in abnormal load escorts, permits / notifications, traffic management, route surveys and route planning. Its escort vehicles are fully-equipped to meet the Code of Practice and are ready to work anywhere in Ireland. The company is continually investing in its fleet, which is one of the best around. It is currently running 13 rigid and tractor units which are a mix of Volvo, Scania, DAF and Renault. Just added is a stunning new DAF XF 530 FAX 8x2 rigid unit complete with a 22-30ft extendable custom Nugent body and a Palfinger PK 76002 crane with 20m reach.

It will soon be joined by a Scania R500 8x2 tractor unit with a PK165002 crane, and two new escort vehicles to assist with abnormal load movements. “We’re very happy with how the new DAF XF is performing. It has been put to work straight away!” Richard explains.

“We purchased it from Damien Finn in DAF Trucks Ireland who was a great help to us in building and spec'ing the truck. Palfinger, who we have been dealing with for the last 20 years, supplied us with the PK76002 crane. The sign writing and paintwork on the new truck was applied by Darren Hollywood Signs from Newry, who has been looking after our graphics since 1997. The fleet of truck mounted cranes range from 72 to 165 tonne metre.

“Our trailers are a mixture of step frame, low loader, flat, many with power steering and extendable floors. Trailers are from Nooteboom, Broshuis, Dennison, SDC, Kassbohrer, Macauley, Scheuerle and Faymonville. There are 16 trailers in the fleet, including some new Faymonville and Max trailers. The new Faymonville and Max trailers have come from Joe Mooney in Ashbourne Truck Centre.

"These include a custom built three-axle flat extendable steer trailer and a MAX extendable 4-axle step frame both with hydraulic power steered axles."

Faymonville is the world’s leading manufacturer of vehicles for heavy load transport and specialised transport. The Belgium brand’s semi-trailers, lowbed trailers, modular vehicles and self-propelled vehicles can be used to transport anything that is exceptionally heavy, long, wide or tall, with payloads from 15 to 25,000 tonnes... and more.

Rino Trailers Holland supplied a Scheurle 2-axle extendable wafer deck with rear steer, lowering & raising functions which are designed specifically for transporting loads that require a low loading height. And John O'Neill Heavy Haulage have added a custom new MAC two axle drag trailer, from McCauley Trailers in Toomebridge for the rigid trucks.

Richard adds: “Anyone that knows me knows that I’m a stickler for detail. The gear ratio, overhang etc have to be spot on. I built the past couple of trucks myself and it’s important for me to have the spec right.”

Behind the wheel of every O’Neill truck is a reliable, experienced and courteous driver. “Our drivers are brilliant at what they do. We have three lads with over 20 years’ experience each. That counts for a lot.”

The Co.Dublin operator takes great pride in the appearance of its trucks. With their striking red, white and gold livery, they are a real head-turner. Regular maintenance is carried out both in-house and by the main dealers to ensure there is no such thing as downtime. In summary, John O’Neill Heavy Haulage Ltd prides itself on its professional, dependable, trustworthy, value-for-money and unrivalled service. The long- established and highly-regarded family business would like to take this opportunity to thank its valued clients and suppliers for their continued support as well as its great staff and team who have kept the company operating for over 40 years.
